Positive Reinforcement At Its Best – Weight Loss Camps For Kids

Obese children face many challenges.  Physically, they are unable to move quickly, they lack balance and stamina and many of them don’t know what a flexible body feels like.  Well-meaning parents often try to change the diet of their children, limit food and snack intake and provide incentives for their child to lose weight.

Incentives for weight loss in a child seldom work as planned.  Children have short attention spans and diets take time.  The child who eagerly accepts the challenge of losing weight in order to buy a special toy or visit a fun place will quickly lose sight of the prize when faced with a bag of potato chips.

He may try hard to stay on a diet at home but eat anything and everything when visiting a friend or staying with his grandparents.  To a young child force to diet – what his parents don’t see him eat just doesn’t count as calories in his mind.

What obese children don’t get is positive reinforcement.   They are well loved by their family but the dismay about their obesity is clear to some.   Other children are fully accepted with no mention of their size and encouraged to eat more by parents who equate food with love.  Even a young child knows he is different.  Criticism can lead a child to think of himself as bad while children who are overfed “with love” may simply be confused.

Weight loss camps for kids are based on positive reinforcement.  Every effort a child makes at camp is praised.  Each small result is met with positive comments.  Rewards for camp activities and competitions are non-food based.  Pounds lost and exercises accomplished are never ignored by counselors or other campers.

Humor is highly encouraged and at fat camps the humor is all in fun rather than the cruel humor obese children may have experienced outside the camp.  Children who have been criticized consistently by family members begin to bloom when they receive positive enforcement for the good things they do.   Counselors help children who are criticized at home understand the criticism is meant to help and may help the child learn to respond to comments by family in a positive way.

Positive reinforcement at weight loss camp is aimed at the person, not at the fat kid.  The counselors encourage traits of kindness, helpfulness and friendship and the children quickly learn to encourage each other.

Even children who are resistant to attending weight loss camps in the beginning can quickly make a place for themselves in the camp group.  As they are complimented for the good things they do and say, their self confidence grows.   They begin to see themselves as worthwhile people and for some obese children this is a new experience.
